The issue of health… You witness interesting discussions, like “money or health?” or “station or health?”… But when you lose your health you know the answer!
First you are shocked. You are far away from understanding the seriousness of the situation. Then you look for a reason. You start reasoning. Then, depending on the nature of the problem you find yourself somewhere between being horrified and indifferent. If it is an illness known to be dangerous, like cancer for example, you experience horror. A deep sadness is waiting at your doorstep. Some of us with fragile personalities walk around like a living corpse. We do not read up about the subject, we are in denial… How we look at and envy those who with a healthy complexion rush around like gazelles giving the appearance of full health. Is that not so?
By the time you accept the situation and spring into action to find a solution a fairly long time has passed. Now you question why you started acting so late, and look for someone to blame. The first person you see is you yourself. Any meaningful contact with medical professionals usually coincides with this period. Now there is a new army in our life. Doctors, nurses, caretakers and others… People whom once upon a time we only heard mentioned in songs, novels, in the news…
The health situation that suddenly knocked at your door becomes the axis of your life. By God, one’s whole life philosophy undergoes a change. What is important is separated from what is unimportant and only the one important thing remains, which is health… All those promises given to take you back to your former days… You see people who have been conned out of their homes and everything they possess. All this is in order to return to the former days which are known as happy, to those situations for which it is now said: “Oh, just the dream of it is worth the world!”
You say to the doctor: “In heaven it is God, on earth it is you!” Some doctors believe this role to be true (the phrase used where I come from is “for real”)… States occur that are almost orgasmic! Some doctors consider themselves totally unworthy and leave their patient alone in the dark. But there are some doctors who provide information and as a first step remove the fear. When he sees that the patient does not understand the information provided, he explains it again and again… He does not tire of it or get weary. He does not look down on the patient. In the light of the information given no darkness, no fear remains. And where he says: “that’s all at present, advanced investigations are ongoing to obtain further information!” that is the point where love starts. The army of health workers enter into heart-to-heart talks with the patient. After all they are helpless creatures that share the same fate, both of them…
What about depression? That remains… In some you see it openly. Others suffer it silently.
May God protect you from more health problems than you can bare, may all your pains disappear, may our souls come with joy and go with joy in this world of mortality…
